Kane Twins: A Cut Scene from Frostbite

The back yard was dark and empty, the lights from the house throwing long shadows over the grass. Strife leaned against a tree, a shadowy silhouette. The only thing that gave him away was the glowing red end of his cigarette and the way the smoke drifted back toward the party.

"Can I have one?"

He didn't turn his head, just flicked the ash to the ground. "You're too young to smoke."

She took the pack from him, muttering, "I'm half a minute younger than you."

"Come on, don't," he said. But he didn't move to take the cigarettes back. "You don't even smoke."

She slipped one out of the pack. "I've been meaning to start."

"I'm not lighting that for you."

"I'll make you dream about pink elephants until you're fifty."

He sighed and dug in his pocket for a lighter, then tossed it to her. "I'll never forgive you for the first time you did that."

Light from the house fell on half her face, so he saw her smirk and lift the flame, inhale when the cigarette lit, then cough a little and grimace. "Yeah, I love you too."

They stood in silence for a while, the smoke surrounding them and then tearing away on the cold wind. He didn't ask why she was out there with him.

After a minute or two, Candy sighed and dropped her cigarette, putting it out with the toe of her shoe. She coughed. "I think I'll pass on making this a habit. It tastes terrible."

Strife shrugged and blew a stream of smoke between his lips, flicking ash into a nearby bush. "Yeah, well. I've been meaning to quit, myself."

She eyed him, but just said, "Mom's going to kill you if she smells smoke on your clothes again."

"She'll get over it when I tell her you were making out with a stranger."

Her eyes narrowed. "You're a jerk."

He was silent for a second, then rolled his eyes and looked at her. "Don't worry about it. I won't tell her."

"I know." She leaned against the tree next to him, their arms touching. "You always have my back."

He finished his cigarette and dropped it next to hers.

"I mean, you are kind of overprotective. But . . ." She smiled and bumped her shoulder against his. "You're a good brother."

He tugged on her hair and smiled. "Yeah, well. Maybe I shouldn't be." Then he gave her a push toward the house. "It's cold out here. Let's get inside."
